Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta – Canada

View of Waterton from Bear's Hump Trail

Travel Dates: August 2023

Things to do in Waterton Park:

Bison Paddock Loop Road: Before entering Waterton Lakes National Park, don’t miss this quick 10 minute driving loop where you can see a herd of bison up close. Thanks to the conservation projects, the bisons are placed in this gated area between the spring and fall, and are relocated during the winter months.

Because these bison are still technically wild, they can be dangerous so people are required to stay in their vehicle and drive slowly around the loop. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are not allowed here.

Prince of Wales Hotel: Popular spot for tourists because of the view of Upper Waterton Lake and mountain ranges (you can also see the U.S. at the other end of the lake). Although the view is nice, if you want to park your car at the hotel you have to pay $10.50 Canadian Dollar (they also do 1:1 USD) for a day pass to access their property. An alternative is to park just outside of the hotel property at Bear’s Hump Trail parking lot (which is free) and walk up 6 minutes to the hotel. For us, it was worth paying the daily pass since the hotel has a bar, restaurant, gift shop, and restrooms.

Bear’s Hump Trail: A moderate, steep hike but with stepped paths (I recommend hiking poles!). The hike was about an hour roundtrip for us but can take a bit longer depending on your fitness level. I highly recommend this trail because you’re able to get a bird’s eye view of the surrounding lake, mountains, the entire town, and the Prince of Wales Hotel. As mentioned above, parking is free but space is limited.

Cameron Falls: Very quick and easy stop to see the waterfall right in the town. There are many parking spaces near the area and no hiking is involved; if you want a view from the top of the waterfall, a short trail with steps is available.

Where to eat:

Wieners of Waterton – Hot dog place with unlimited toppings and sauces, which in my opininon was the only thing that made the hot dog good. Otherwise if you don’t care for hot dogs, feel free to skip. It is a small storefront so there are no bathrooms and they only have outdoor seating.

What you need to know/Other tips for visiting Waterton:

It costs $21 Canadian Dollar per day to enter Waterton Park. You’ll pay the entry fee right before you drive into the town.
