Travel Dates: September 2023
Things to do in Interlaken:
Harder Kulm: Take an 8-minute funicular ride to the mountain’s summit for unparalleled views of Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. It costs 34 CHF round trip (17 CHF one-way), but if you have the Swiss Pass, Half Fare Card or Eurail Pass there is a discount.
At the top of the mountain, indulge in the offerings of a restaurant and a viewing platform. While the views are stunning, the 34 CHF admission may be steep. However, if you get the discount (17 CHF with Swiss Pass or Half Fare Card and 25.60 CHF with Eurail Pass), the experience becomes more worthwhile. Otherwise, if you’re feeling adventurous, a 2.5-hour uphill hike offers a cost-free but challenging alternative.
For a smoother experience, consider purchasing tickets in advance to access a shorter line for the funicular. Those with the Swiss Pass or Eurail Pass can access this shorter line as well. Keep in mind that the return journey has only one line, potentially leading to longer wait times. Additionally, Harder Kulm is conveniently located just a 6-minute walk from Interlaken Ost train station, making it easily accessible for all travelers.
Paragliding: Interlaken is renowned for paragliding, as you’ll see paragliders constantly in the sky. While we didn’t have the chance to experience it, I highly recommend it based on the stories I’ve heard, especially if it’s on your bucket list. There’s also skydiving here if interested.
Things to do in Thun:
Oberhofen Castle: Explore a stunning castle and garden near Lake Thun, just a 16-minute bus ride from Thun city center. While we didn’t enter the castle due to the entry fee, the scenic views outside and in the public garden were absolutely breathtaking.
Flusswelle Thun: Witness people attempting to surf near the bridge, where powerful water currents create impressive waves, providing an exciting spectacle.
Other things to do in Thun include visiting Schloss Thun (Thun Castle), walking up Kirchentreppe (an interesting set of stairs/passage way that leads to the castle), and checking out the small shops. These all can be skipped if you have other plans around town.
Tip for visiting Interlaken & Thun:
For tips on public transportation, check out the Bern blog post.
Specifically for Interlaken, make sure to get off at the second Interlaken stop, Interlaken Ost and not Interlaken West. Interlaken Ost is where Harder Kulm is located and where people transfer to Lauterbrunnen (more details in this blog), Grindelwald, Jungfrau, etc.
